Romantic November Wedding
Love and candlelight was in the air for this lush and romantic fall wedding
When friends introduced Lisa and Matt, they knew right away that they were onto something special, and tied the knot at Ruth Lake Country Club on November 14th, 2015. With only three months to plan the wedding of their dreams, this couple had a vision and the end result was spectacular. Fragrant Design loved playing such a big role in the wedding floral and event decor, and it was one of our favorites of the season. Check out the details of this beautiful November wedding, starting with Lisa and Matt’s love story.

How they Met
We were introduced by mutual friends at a first birthday party. I got an email from Matt afterward and thought “What do I have to lose?” So we met at a bar downtown. It was one of the nights the Blackhawks were playing in the Stanley Cup Finals, so it was hard to hear. But we still hit it off. We started dating in May, and just a year and two months later, we were engaged.
“Matt is one of the nicest people I have ever met,” says Lisa. “He’s funny—he made me laugh—and we have the same values.”
Matt lived in Lincoln Park and invited me over on a Friday. Normally he would pick me up, but not this time. It was one of the hottest days and I had to walk to the train to the El, get up to his place which was like another mile, carrying a weekend bag. I couldn’t believe he was making me walk! But when I got there, the door was a little ajar. I walked in and there were rose petals and candles leading up to the roof, and champagne. That’s where he proposed.
Planning the Wedding
We got engaged in July 2015. We only had a three month engagement. We had a wedding planner, Kim Gapinksi, and without her would have gone crazy with work and moving to the suburbs from the city. There was a lot going on, but we were excited to get married. We were so happy that we had a quick engagement. We would just pick something and move on.
With the help of their wedding planner, Kim Gapinski of Bride + Joy Events, they were able to pull everything together.
Describe the vibe of your wedding. What was your inspiration for planning?
I guess I envisioned it more romantic, I did soft colors like blush and ivory and champagne. My ring has a rose gold band, with platinum around the diamond. I wanted to play with the rose gold because it was a little different, and created a vintage vibe. I also wanted the flowers to be very lush, and create a dreamy type wedding. I found the backdrops with the café lights on Pinterest and my wedding planner and Fragrant Design came up with putting some sort of greenery in back of it, which turned out amazing.
“I remember being on the dance floor and looking around and wanting to be in this room forever because it was so pretty and exactly what I wanted,” says Lisa.
Looking back, what was your favorite moment of your big day?
I think seeing Matt for the first look – I was so excited to see him. Then then I think everything after the ceremony! I was really nervous about the ceremony, it was the only thing I was worried about my makeup and that I would start crying. Once I got married and I didn’t cry, it was so much fun. We had a great time, enjoyed our friends. I was happy we did the first look pictures, it took nervousness away, it made the day a little less stressful.
What was one detail that came together even better than expected?
I would say the design from Fragrant Design. I had a vision, but I didn’t imagine how it would come together. It was so beautiful. There were 20-30 candles on the table and it gave the room such a romantic atmosphere. I was so surprised when I saw the room for the first time – it was so beyond what I thought it would be. All the details they did were so pretty and I was so happy. I loved the candles and the flowers and it was exactly what we talked about. I never wanted to leave the room because it was the wedding of my dreams.

How did you find Fragrant Design?
Our wedding planner, Kim, recommended them. They understood the type of vibe I was going for. They were super professional and friendly, and came up with some amazing designs that really added to my original vision. They were able to listen to what I wanted and show me what they had fit what I was originally looking for. They exceeded my expectations by far.
“Fragrant Design was amazing, and my decor at the wedding was stunning. I still get compliments to this day,” says bride Lisa Hufford.
