Trick or Treat: The Ultimate Halloween Wedding
When it comes to your wedding, we like to think it’s all in the details. Whether it’s non traditional table decor, a candy bar (!) or even a choreographed family dance number, sometimes it’s the smallest things that make all the difference.
For Moria & Russell, their Halloween wedding was stacked with many memorable moments that we’re completely gushing over. Since they met on Halloween, it was only fitting that they tied the knot on Halloween, right? In this Q&A, we sat down with Moria and learned all about the wedding planning process, including their adorable proposal and why she loved working with Fragrant Design. Enjoy!
A Fragrant Design Wedding Story

Tell us a little bit about your love story. How did you meet?
We met at a Halloween party in Ann Arbor while we were both undergrads at the University of Michigan. Russ was dressed up as an inflatable ostrich jersey (battery fanny pack & all!) and I was Superman.
How did you get engaged?
Russ told me we were going to a tea tasting on a day off from work. When we got there, he sent me to a nearby salon to get my hair and nails done where my best friend was there waiting with champagne.
Russ had a big box waiting for me when I got back to our apartment that was filled with two dresses he picked out. He then had a car bring me to a park on Lake Michigan where he was waiting. After he proposed, Russ had a romantic dinner planned at our favorite restaurant. Then, he told me we would just go grab some dessert somewhere else and to my surprise, all of our friends were there waiting.
What were you most looking forward to about your wedding day?
We choreographed a dance with our parents as part of our Father/Daughter and Mother/Son dance. It started out really slow and sweet and then we “rickrolled” everyone. We practiced a lot leading up to the wedding and both sets parents were super nervous!
Describe the vibe of your wedding. What was your inspiration for planning?
Romantic and funky. We wanted to have a really personal and intimate ceremony but we also wanted to throw the best dance party, especially since our wedding was on Halloween (when we met), so the stakes were pretty high.
Looking back, what was your favorite moment of the big day?
Our first look - it was so emotional and overwhelming.
What was one detail that came together better than expected?
The candy bar! We wanted to create a ridiculous “trick or treat” experience for our friends and family. Since grown-ups don’t usually get to go trick or treating, we made sure that it was over the top and so much fun. My mom worked really hard on that aspect.
How many people attended?
How many bridesmaids and groomsmen did you have?
9 of each
Why did you choose Fragrant Design?
I went to college with one of the designers at Fragrant Design and have always been so impressed with her talent. Having friends as vendors always helps with all the little wedding anxieties.
How did Fragrant Design help bring your wedding day vision to life?
Fragrant Design took all of my ideas that I had been collecting on Pinterest boards (and in my head) for years and made it beautiful and cohesive. They listened to every detail I wanted and even made sure the hundreds of spray painted pumpkins we did were in tip top shape.
It was such a pleasure working with you, Moria. We’re so glad your special day with Russell exceeded all expectations. We wish you only the best in your new life together!
